Todd Babiak is an author, journalist and, sometimes, a screenwriter. Toby: A Man, his fourth novel, is published by HarperCollins Canada.
The Garneau Block, his second novel, was longlisted for the Giller Prize. It won the City of Edmonton Book Prize and was shortlisted for the Alberta Book Award for best novel. The Book of Stanley, his third book, was also shortlisted for the Alberta Book Award for best novel. Its film rights have been optioned and it is being developed as a television series. Both are available as e-books.
Todd’s first novel, Choke Hold, won the Henry Kreisel Award for best first book and was a finalist for the Rogers Writers Trust Fiction Prize. It was optioned for film and he was chosen to co-write the screenplay with his friend Jason Margolis. Ask him about that sometime. It’s really funny!
His screenplay, The Great One, also co-written with Jason Margolis, won a Praxis Screenwriting Fellowship. It is a magical realist teen comedy about the day Wayne Gretzky left Edmonton to play for the Los Angeles Kings.
He is working on a number of television projects. Again, ask him about that sometime.
Todd is currently living with his family in Douarnenez, France. He is writing a series of essays for the Edmonton Journal about relocating an English-speaking Canadian family to France. It is called Learning French (start at the beginning, if you want to read them).
Todd still owns a house in Edmonton where he has worked as the city columnist and culture columnist for the Edmonton Journal. He has published freelance journalism widely.
